The must-see museum in Jouy-en-Josas
Located just a stone's throw from Versailles, this museum showcases an important regional heritage known worldwide: Toile de Jouy. As its name suggests, this fabric, produced in Jouy-en-Josas, notably supplied the Court of Versailles. The museum was created in 1977 to showcase these magnificent canvases and revive the Manufacture des Toiles de Jouy, founded in 1760 by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, who also owned the Domaine du Montcel, hence the strong link between the Dolce by Wyndham Versailles hotel and the famous Toiles de Jouy that adorn some of the château's walls.
Symbol of French excellence
If today Toiles de Jouy continue to inspire the world of fashion and decoration, they had their heyday in the 18th century. In 1760, following the lifting of an 80-year ban on printing and using printed fabrics in France, Oberkampf set up a factory that quickly became Europe's leading textile manufacturer. Today, the museum is housed in the Château de l'Eglantine in Jouy-en-Josas. It boasts a magnificent collection of 10,000 pieces representing the French know-how typical of the period and a symbol of its international influence.
